Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) researchers have found that treatment with stimulant drugs does not increase and appears to significantly decrease the risk that girls with ADHD will begin smoking cigarettes or using alcohol or drugs. Their report in the October Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine parallels the findings of several earlier studies in boys, which needed to be confirmed in girls.
While smoking poses a health threat to both men and women, women require less tobacco exposure than men to have a significant increased risk for colorectal cancer, according to new research presented at the 73rd Annual ACG Scientific Meeting in Orlando. In a separate analysis, researchers found smoking may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer precursor lesions, particularly in patients with a strong family history of the disease.
British Lung Foundation supports the publication of the Beyond Smoking Kills report being launched by Action on Smoking & Health (ASH). "Two thirds of people with smoking-related lung disease tell us there should be a ban on cigarette vending machines in future and the same number say they want to see cigarettes removed from display in supermarkets" says Jill Morrell, Head of Public Affairs at the British Lung Foundation.
Smoking cessation (commonly known
as quitting, or kicking the habit) is the effort to stop
smoking tobacco products. Stop smoking
is commonly considered to be difficult. Psychological and pharmacological
aids are available to help people quit smoking, although success
rates are relatively low.
